Richie's Great Adventure

My son Richie went missing on Monday morning, and there was a massive search effort throughout the day and evening.  We got a call at 11 this morning that they had found him.

Thank you all for your prayers, thoughts, help, and rejoicing these past 36 hours. Autistic folk often don't anticipate how others might interpret their actions, and they are also not known to be meticulous planners. Rich is high-functioning (~Asbergers) and has a good heart. He decided it was time to strike off to college, so packed a bag and left the house before dawn, figuring he would call us when he got settled. He successfully navigated the Chicago commuter rail, then Amtrak, a taxi, and checked into a hotel on campus about 3.5h from Chicago. Thankfully the campus police noticed him and talked with him, eventually connecting with Naperville Police. We got the call at about 11am just as our other son Jonathan and I were about to head into the city to search, and as armies Argonne, Church, UChicago, and School of the Art Institute friends were organizing a systematic area-wide flier distribution and search.

We jumped in the car and 4 hours later were having pizza together. Richie is safe in his bed, we are all exhausted, but joyously thankful.

A lengthy project with @jjedi but worth the effort!

1:  The shell is made from 17 staves cut at 10.6 degrees and (using a jig on a table saw) cut as trapazoids with top width to yield a 12" diameter and bottom width to yield 9" - giving it a tapered shape.

2:  After planing the vertices of the polygon we sanded to turn it into more of a circle.

3: @jjedi after staining and finishing the shell, creating and roping the rings, and goat skin head mounted ready to rope down.

4: After getting the head nice and snug fully roped, @jjedi shaves the head.

5. The nearly finished drum, head trimmed and dried, and after another go round tightening the ropes, we tune it.

6. Voila, finished off with a nice handle

Remembering the Sailboat

Remembering our old friend the sailboat... On September 5, 2010 we had to put down the old boat due to fatal hull injuries causing severe waterlogging. It had been a happy member of the family since Joanie sailed it in the 1970s and served as a trainer for all three kids.

A little recreational jackhammer work (side benefit removing an unwanted concrete pad to make room for plants) followed by a cool-down pulling the boat.  :-)
